Google retracts prohibition on arming AI

(MENAFN) google has updated its artificial intelligence principles, removing the previous ban on using AI for military purposes, including weapons development and surveillance tools. Initially introduced in 2018, the guidelines prohibited the use of AI for applications that could cause harm or violate internationally accepted norms. This decision followed criticism over Google’s involvement in a US Department of Defense project.

The new version of Google’s principles, announced on Tuesday, omits these restrictions. Instead, the company has shifted focus towards innovation, collaboration, and promoting the role of democracies in leading AI development based on values such as freedom, equality, and human rights.

Critics, including former Google ethical AI team lead Margaret Mitchell, have expressed concerns that the removal of the “harm” clause signals a potential shift toward developing technologies with lethal applications. Furthermore, reports indicate Google has been collaborating with the Israeli military, offering AI tools to the Israel Defense Forces amidst the Gaza conflict, despite earlier claims to limit involvement to civilian sectors.

This policy change occurs as AI-related risks continue to rise. AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton has warned of the potential existential threat posed by AI systems surpassing human intelligence, urging significant investments in AI safety.
