UN Responds Cautiously to Trump's Gaza Proposal, Highlights Ethnic Cleansing Concern

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, the United Nations refrained from offering a direct comment on US President Donald Trump's suggestion to "take over the Gaza Strip" and displace Palestinians, but emphasized that forced displacement is considered "ethnic cleansing."

UN representative Stephane Dujarric was asked at a press conference whether UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres "believes" Trump's proposal amounted to ethnic cleansing. Dujarric responded: "Any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing."

While Dujarric did not give a clear statement on Trump's Gaza proposal, he confirmed that Guterres would address a meeting hosted on Wednesday by the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP).

When asked by Anadolu if Guterres was concerned that Trump's remarks might "further encourage more destruction on Palestine territories" and "set a dangerous precedent," Dujarric referred to the broader context of ongoing global crises.

"As a matter of rule, as a matter of principle, we (UN) support efforts to resolve conflicts through dialog, through negotiations that respect the rights and the dignity of all involved," Dujarric stated.
