South African President Reaches Out to Musk After Trump Threatens Funding Cut Over Land Law

(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke with Elon Musk, the influential billionaire advisor to Donald Trump, a day after the new U.S. president threatened to halt funding to South Africa due to its controversial land expropriation law, according to Ramaphosa’s spokesperson on Wednesday.

The call between Ramaphosa and Musk made sense, said spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, because the South African-born entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX has previously engaged in investment talks with Ramaphosa and is a supporter of Trump.

The land expropriation law, signed by Ramaphosa last month, has sparked debate as it allows the government to seize land from private owners.

Trump stated on Sunday that he would suspend U.S. financial aid while investigating South Africa’s alleged actions of “confiscating land” from certain individuals, though he did not specify who was being affected. He wrongly claimed that the South African government was taking land and described their actions as “perhaps far worse than that,” though he did not elaborate.

In response, the South African government labeled Trump’s statement and Musk’s criticism as “misinformation and distortions,” adding that the conversation with Musk was aimed at correcting these inaccuracies.
