IRS Workers Involved in 2025 Tax Season Cannot Accept Buyout Offer Until May 15

(MENAFN) IRS employees involved in the 2025 tax season are prohibited from accepting the buyout offer presented by the Trump administration until May 15, 2025, according to a letter issued to IRS staff on Wednesday.

The letter specifies that certain positions critical to the filing season, including those in Taxpayer Services, Information Technology, and the Taxpayer Advocate Service, will be exempt from the buyout plan until the specified date in May.

This development follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a program offering buyouts to federal employees through a "deferred resignation program" aimed at reducing the federal workforce quickly. The buyout offer has a deadline of February 6.

The program targets approximately 2.3 million federal workers, offering buyouts to all full-time federal employees, with exceptions for military personnel, U.S. Postal Service workers, and those in immigration enforcement. If accepted, employees would receive around eight months of their salary.

As of November, the federal government employed over 3 million people, representing nearly 1.9% of the U.S. civilian workforce, according to the Pew Research Center.
