Doha, Qatar: As part of its humanitarian efforts to empower displaced and affected people in Syria, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed phase 1 of the livelihood project for widows and displaced families, which involves vocational training, entrepreneurship courses, and startup funding for widows and internally displaced people (IDPs) in northern Syria.

A graduation ceremony was held for 240 women who completed vocational training and 231 young men and women who completed entrepreneurship training.

The graduates are now qualified to start their own business, which would translate into better financial independence and stronger local economic recovery. The eight-month project is aimed at qualifying and training 800 people, including 320 young men and women and 480 women. Also, it provides 450 funding grants for small enterprises that meet certain requirements.

The project's target is about 2,250 direct and indirect beneficiaries, at a total cost of approximately $900,000. It focuses on multiple training in (1) entrepreneurship and small business management for young men and women, and (2) training for widows in four basic professions: cooking and confectionery, women's tailoring, haircutting and beauty, and handicrafts.

Mazen Abdullah, head of QRCS office in Türkiye, stressed the importance of the project in strengthening the local economy and empowering vulnerable families.

“Such projects boost the resilience of families, by enhancing their access to livelihoods and developing their professional skills, thus helping them attain self-sufficiency,” said Abdullah.“The project also restored the training premises, which had been an abandoned and destroyed school. Now, it is a perfect training center."
