(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) VIENNA, Feb 4 (KUNA) -- Kuwait on Tuesday said it aims to bolster its use of outer space in line with a relevant UN committee on the matter, underlining the "long history" of the space industry at home.
Kuwait's foray into the use of outer space began in earnest back in 1963, when it formally joined the UN's International telecommunication Union, followed by the launch of its first domestic communications satellite, the chief of the country's national space research center Dr. Hala Al-Jassar told a gathering of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space's (COPOUS) scientific and technical subcommittee.
The official went on to emphasize Kuwait's commitment to international space treaties and conventions, chief among them the UN'S Outer Space Treaty and the multilateral moon treaty, while its membership in COPOUS has been instrumental its ability to better manage the use of outer space, she added.
Kuwait has ratcheted up its national space research, which in turn, led to the launch of its first satellite into space in 2023, an initiative hailed as a step forward in honing national space exploration skills, which are firmly backed by the country's political leadership, said the official.
COPOUS convenes on an annual basis in a bid to further its mission of promoting and monitoring international cooperation on the peaceful use of outer space. (end)
