White House announces US allocating USD50 million on condoms for Gaza
(MENAFN) During her first press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Donald Trump's newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had identified a wasteful allocation of $50 million in taxpayer dollars for condoms in Gaza. The funds, discovered by DOGE and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), were intended for Gaza residents, which Leavitt criticized as an example of the previous Biden administration's excessive spending.
Leavitt also pointed out an additional $37 million that was earmarked for the World Health Organization (WHO), a body President Trump has now chosen to distance the U.S. from through an executive order. This announcement came shortly after the State Department suspended most foreign aid programs, pending a review to ensure alignment with the Trump administration's foreign policy goals.
However, some, including former U.S. officials and media outlets like CNN, have disputed Leavitt’s claim. They argue that the funds may have been part of a broader sexual health initiative, which could include various medical services beyond just condoms. USAID records have shown no specific funds for condoms allocated to Gaza in recent years, leading to further questions about the accuracy of the statement.
