Trump retracts funds from gender transition for individuals under 19

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has signed an executive order to halt federal support for gender transition medical procedures for individuals under the age of 19. The order, titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” is part of Trump’s broader initiative to undo transgender-friendly policies introduced during the Biden administration.

The executive order, issued on Tuesday, declares that the government will no longer fund, support, or promote the “false claim” that children can undergo irreversible sex-change procedures. The order specifically targets puberty blockers, hormone use, and surgeries as part of the so-called “chemical and surgical mutilation.”

The order argues that such practices are harmful to children and criticizes the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) for its lack of scientific integrity. As a result, all US federal agencies are instructed to revoke policies relying on WPATH's guidance.

Trump’s move also includes directing federal insurance programs, including Medicaid and Tricare, to exclude coverage for gender transition procedures. The Department of Justice is tasked with developing legislation and establishing a private right of action for children and their parents if a minor’s body is harmed by these procedures.

This is the latest in a series of gender-related actions taken by Trump since taking office, as he continues to push back against policies on transgender rights and diversity initiatives under the previous administration. He also signed an order aimed at eliminating "radical gender ideology" in the US military, reinforcing that military service should be reserved for individuals who are mentally and physically fit for duty.
