Media reports Syrian authorities requesting from Russia ‘compensation’

(MENAFN) Syria's new leadership, led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) movement, has requested compensation from Russia in order to "restore trust" between the two nations, according to the state-owned news agency Sana. These remarks were made to Russian diplomats during their first visit to Damascus since the fall of Bashar Assad's government in December 2024. Russia had been a key ally of Assad during the Syrian civil war that began in 2011.

Syria's government has reportedly urged Russia to recognize its "past mistakes" and respect the will of the Syrian people. In response, the Russian delegation emphasized its commitment to rebuilding trust with Syria, suggesting that concrete actions, such as compensation, reconstruction, and restoration, would be essential.

Syria also allegedly requested the extradition of former President Assad, who fled to Russia after the collapse of his government. The Russian delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, reaffirmed Russia's support for Syria, noting their long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship.

The discussions also touched on Russia’s continued military presence in Syria, particularly at the Khmeimim Air Base and the Tartus naval facility. However, no new agreements were reached. Bogdanov indicated that Russia is prepared to assist in stabilizing Syria and addressing its economic and social challenges.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the demands for compensation but emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue with Syria. Earlier, Syria's de facto leader, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, expressed the country's interest in maintaining strong ties with Russia, which he described as the "second most powerful country in the world."
