BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 31. Human Rights
Commissioner (Ombudsperson) of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva has sent
an open letter to Executive Director of Human Rights Watch (HRW)
Tirana Hassan, the statement of the press service of the
Ombudsperson's office said, Trend reports.
The letter notes that the organization has demonstrated a biased
and one-sided attitude toward Azerbaijan in its report for
2024.
“Instead of relying on data open to the general public, annual
and parallel reports of the Ombudsperson regarding the situation
with the protection of human rights and freedoms, on activities to
prevent torture, Human Rights Watch relies on suspicious and biased
sources.
Moreover, representatives of the National Preventive Group met
with several persons mentioned in the HRW report and no facts of
torture or ill-treatment were recorded,” the letter of the
Ombudsperson reads.
The Ombudsperson also emphasized that despite the important
decisions taken to eliminate the consequences of climate change
during the SOR29 in Azerbaijan, which became a platform for
effective discussions to prevent climate change, HRW in its report
did not note these successes in solving urgent problems.
Simultaneously, the letter of Aliyeva emphasizes that the HWR
report does not mention that due to the long-term occupation policy
of Armenia, the fundamental rights and freedoms of over one million
Azerbaijanis were grossly violated, and hundreds of thousands of
Azerbaijanis were forcibly expelled from Armenia. The work on the
safe return of former IDPs to the liberated territories is also not
noted, which is an indicator of the manifestation of double
standards against Azerbaijan.
Sabina Aliyeva urged Human Rights Watch to be fair, impartial,
and based on confirmed facts when preparing its reports.
