Disney fans criticize steep prices at new cake shop in Florida theme park

(MENAFN) A new cake shop, the Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers, is slated to open this fall at Disney's Florida theme park, but it has already drawn criticism for its steep prices. Located on the BoardWalk at Disney World in Orlando, the shop is set to replace the ESPN Club, which closed in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Ahead of its opening, fans have taken to social media to voice their concerns, labeling the cost of some menu items as "obscene" and "offensive."
The menu, displayed outside the bakery, features eye-popping prices, with slices of cake starting at USD22. Among the offerings, Gwendolyn's Famous Earl's Court Chocolate Cake is priced at USD26 per slice, Oprah's "O" List Mint Chocolate Cake at USD24, and a Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Roll Cake at USD22. Critics have pointed out that these prices are significantly higher than those at other Disney venues, with one user remarking that an entire cake at Amorette's in Disney Springs costs about the same as a single slice at the Cake Bake Shop.
Additionally, beverages such as Coca-Cola are priced at USD8, which has been described as "shockingly offensive" given the overall pricing structure. Google reviews reflect similar sentiments, with some expressing disbelief over the cost of basic items, including a hamburger priced at USD32. The shop's offerings will extend beyond cakes to include pies, French pastries, homemade fudge, chocolate truffles, cookies, and a selection of champagne, wine, and beer.
Gavin Doyle, creator of the Mickey Visit Disney World Crown Calendar, shared his perspective with the Daily Mail, noting that the Cake Bake Shop's prices are significantly higher than those at its other locations in Broad Ripple Village and Carmel, Indiana. This disparity has heightened dissatisfaction among Disney fans, who feel that the pricing is out of step with the offerings at the theme park, especially for an independent establishment.
