Report says 80 percent of software engineers must develop new skills amid AI bloom

(MENAFN) A recent report reveals that over 80 percent of software engineers must develop new skills to remain employable in light of the generative AI boom. Gartner, a global research firm, stated that while artificial intelligence will not replace software engineers who upgrade their skills, it will create new roles for them in the industry. This follows ongoing concerns about AI potentially decreasing the demand for human engineers or even entirely taking over their jobs.

The research highlights that, although AI will fundamentally change the role of software engineers, human creativity and expertise will remain vital for crafting complex and innovative software solutions. The memo stresses the importance of investing in AI developer platforms and enhancing the skills of data engineering teams to keep pace with the rapid evolution of AI tools.

Gartner identified three phases of AI's impact on software development. The first phase, expected in the near term, will enhance productivity by streamlining the workflow of current software engineers. In the second phase, many tasks traditionally handled by engineers will become fully automated, with most code being generated by AI rather than written by humans.

In the final phase, AI engineering will become increasingly efficient, prompting companies to actively seek skilled software engineers to address the surging demand for AI-driven software. According to Gartner, approximately 56 percent of software engineers anticipate that the roles of AI and machine learning engineers will be the most sought after. However, many of these engineers also acknowledge that they currently lack the necessary skills to effectively integrate applications with AI and machine learning technologies.
