Kazakhstan Wraps Up Nuclear Power Plant Vote


(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 6. voting has officially concluded in Kazakhstan's national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant, Trend reports.

Polling stations were open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time. The results are expected to be announced within seven days.

As of 6:00 PM local time, voter turnout stood at 61.56%.

Voting in the referendum began on October 6.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev set the referendum date on September 2, 2024.

In 2023, the Kazakh Ministry of energy identified four main contenders for the nuclear power plant project: China's CNNC, South Korea's KHNP, France's EDF, and Russia's Rosatom. The project will also involve international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to provide additional oversight.
