Lavrov Accuses US of Backtracking on Ukraine Peace Initiative

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserted on Monday that the United States has lost its willingness to follow through on its own initiative aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict. According to him, the plan was initially conveyed to Moscow during leader-level negotiations held in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025.

Lavrov argued that, notwithstanding the discussions and understandings achieved at the Anchorage talks, Washington has persisted with a strategy centered on restraining and pressuring Russia. He made these remarks during an interview with a channel, emphasizing that the American approach has not shifted despite earlier diplomatic engagement.

"Besides the fact that they supposedly proposed something regarding Ukraine and we were ready, and now they are not ready, we also do not see any bright future in the economic sphere," Lavrov said.

The foreign minister further claimed that, following what he characterized as “constructive talks,” the United States imposed restrictive measures on major Russian oil firms Rosneft and Lukoil. He also accused Washington of conducting a “war” against oil tankers operating in international waters.

Lavrov added that additional steps include exerting influence on partners such as India to discourage them from buying Russian energy supplies. He said this approach mirrors previous pressure applied to European countries, which he noted were compelled to purchase "exorbitantly priced" American liquefied natural gas.

"Europe has long been banned from buying Russian energy resources. In other words, the Americans have declared their goal of economic dominance."

Concluding his remarks, Lavrov stated that the United States is "deliberately" seeking economic supremacy and control over global energy corridors, employing tactics that Russia considers unacceptable.
