Totalenergies, Air France-KLM Forge Major Agreement For Sustainable Aviation Fuel

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 23. TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have signed a significant agreement to supply up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable Aviation fuel (SAF) to Air France-KLM Group airlines over the next decade, extending until 2035, Trend reports.

This new agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) established in 2022, which initially set the stage for the supply of 800,000 tons of SAF. The revised contract reinforces both companies' commitment to reducing the environmental impact of air transport and accelerating the decarbonization of the industry.

By 2030, Air France-KLM aims to decrease its CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 30% compared to 2019 levels. The SAF supplied to Air France-KLM will be produced from waste and residues in TotalEnergies' biorefineries across France and Europe, ensuring compliance with strict sourcing policies that prioritize second-generation SAF not competing with global food supplies.

The use of SAF can result in CO2 emissions reductions of at least 75% and up to 90% over its lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels.“This agreement represents a significant step toward the energy transition for both the aviation sector and our refineries, creating a win-win scenario for industry and aviation,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. He emphasized the company's commitment to pioneering biorefinery and SAF production technologies over the past decade.

Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM Group, highlighted the critical need for sustainable aviation fuel in achieving the company's decarbonization goals.“This agreement with TotalEnergies reinforces our dedication to developing a robust SAF sector in France and Europe, vital for the industry's future and for European energy independence.” As both companies move forward, this partnership signals a promising future for sustainable aviation fuel in Europe and the ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship in air travel.
