Germany urges for increases international collaboration to address AIDS epidemic

(MENAFN) Germany has called for increased international collaboration to address the ongoing AIDS epidemic during the 25th World AIDS Conference in Munich. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in his opening remarks, emphasized the need for a unified global effort to achieve the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Scholz highlighted that, despite progress, the crisis remains severe, with one person dying from AIDS every minute. He stressed that this is an urgent issue that requires substantial action and change.

Scholz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to supporting global AIDS efforts but also urged other donor countries to contribute more financially. He particularly called for enhanced international support for the World Health Organization (WHO), which plays a critical role in the global fight against AIDS.

The Chancellor outlined a comprehensive strategy against HIV and AIDS, emphasizing the importance of further research, improved prevention measures, patient-centered education, and combating discrimination. These elements are crucial in the ongoing battle against the epidemic.

Munich is hosting the world’s largest scientific meeting dedicated to combating the AIDS virus, with over 10,000 participants expected to attend. The conference brings together doctors, health experts, and activists from more than 175 countries to discuss strategies for containing HIV and AIDS. This is the first time in over three decades that the conference is being held in Germany, the last occurrence being in Berlin in 1993.

Since 2004, global AIDS-related deaths have decreased by more than two-thirds, reflecting significant progress. However, according to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the current death rate remains high, with one person dying every minute. The resurgence of infections, particularly in Eastern Europe and persistently high rates in Africa, highlights the continued challenge.
