Brazil's President Presses Trump to Revoke Tariffs, Sanctions
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva urged U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday to eliminate the 40% tariff surcharge on Brazilian goods and lift sanctions imposed on Brazilian officials. The request came during a 30-minute phone conversation between the two leaders.
“The two leaders spoke in a friendly tone for 30 minutes, during which they reminisced about the good chemistry they had in New York during the UN General Assembly,” a Brazilian government statement said.
The discussion focused on improving strained diplomatic relations and addressing U.S. penalties targeting Brazil.
In a message posted on X, Lula emphasized the importance of resolving trade tensions. He highlighted that Brazil is one of just three G20 countries where the U.S. maintains a trade surplus, urging the removal of the tariff surcharge on Brazilian exports. “Brazil is one of only three G20 countries with which the US maintains a trade surplus,” Lula noted, calling for the removal of the punitive tax on Brazilian products.
Additionally, Lula pressed Trump to lift the sanctions targeting several Brazilian officials, including the visa revocation of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and his wife.
"I see our direct contact as an opportunity to restore the 201-year-old friendly relations between the two largest democracies in the West," Lula said, underscoring the urgency of repairing the rift.
The two leaders had previously exchanged pleasantries at the UN General Assembly, a meeting Trump referred to as one where they had developed good "chemistry." Following Monday's call, they agreed to appoint high-ranking negotiators to facilitate further talks.
Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to head U.S. discussions on tariffs, while Lula designated Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad to represent Brazil.
Both leaders also agreed to meet in person in the near future. Lula proposed a face-to-face meeting during the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia and reiterated his invitation for Trump to attend the COP30 summit in Belem, Brazil.
Trump is slated to visit Malaysia as part of an extended trip to Asia, which will also include stops in Japan and South Korea. However, it remains unclear whether Trump will attend the ASEAN summit.
