Former Egyptian Intelligence Chief El-Tohamy Dies At 77
Born in 1947, El-Tohamy graduated from the Military Academy in December 1967 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Egyptian Army, serving in key leadership roles within the infantry. His strategic acumen and military prowess led to his appointment as commander of a mechanized infantry division and later as a tactical formation commander.
El-Tohamy's career took a pivotal turn when he was appointed Director of Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance. In this role, he oversaw some of the most sensitive operations safeguarding Egypt's national security. His expertise and leadership solidified his reputation as a cornerstone of the nation's defense infrastructure.
In 2004, then-President Hosni Mubarak tapped El-Tohamy to head the Administrative Control Authority, tasked with overseeing government integrity and combating corruption. While his tenure saw significant strides in promoting transparency and accountability, it was not without challenges.
The political upheaval of 2012, which saw the Muslim Brotherhood briefly take power, targeted many of Egypt's top officials, including El-Tohamy. Despite facing unfounded accusations and immense pressure, he maintained his integrity from his position at the Administrative Control Authority in September 2012, El-Tohamy's service to his country was far from over.
In July 2013, interim President Adly Mansour appointed El-Tohamy to head the General Intelligence Service, a critical role during a period of significant political unrest. His leadership was instrumental in stabilizing the country's security situation following the 2013 revolution. Under his guidance, the intelligence service enhanced its capabilities and reinforced the nation's security infrastructure.
El-Tohamy served as head of the General Intelligence Service until September 2014. His tenure was marked by a deep sense of duty and unwavering commitment to national security. In recognition of his exceptional service, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi awarded him the Order of the Republic, First Class.
The passing of Mohamed Farid El-Tohamy is a significant loss for Egypt. His dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his country will be remembered for generations to come.
