Myanmar arrests supermarket executives over rice price inflation, including Japanese citizen

(MENAFN) Myanmar's military junta has detained four executives from leading supermarket chains in the country on allegations of selling rice at inflated prices, state media reported on Monday. Among the arrested is a senior Japanese employee involved in a joint venture project. According to the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper, authorities have arrested a total of 11 individuals, including rice traders, mill officials, and retailers, accusing them of inflating prices by 31 to 70 percent above the regulated levels.

In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed that Myanmar police are investigating a Japanese national. He emphasized that the Japanese government is taking appropriate measures, which include maintaining communication with the employer of the detained Japanese citizen and providing necessary support. The Japanese government is also urging local authorities for the immediate release of the Japanese national.

The junta-controlled Myanmar newspaper revealed that among those detained is an executive from the Aeon Orange department store chain, a collaboration between a Japanese company and a Myanmar firm.
