Moroccan official underlines strategic role of Dakhla port in Sahel region

(MENAFN) On Friday, Mounir Hawari, Director of the Regional Investment Center in Dakhla, Sahara Province, underscored the pivotal role of the port of Dakhla as an Atlantic gateway for the African Sahel countries. In a press interview discussing approved projects in Dakhla and its surrounding regions, Hawari emphasized the port's significance in enhancing trade and connectivity across the Sahel region.

The initiative follows a directive by Morocco's King Mohammed VI on November 6, aiming to facilitate Atlantic Ocean access for Sahel countries to maximize their economic benefits. This vision hinges on bolstering infrastructure and integrating transportation and communication networks within the region. Hawari highlighted that the port of Dakhla, currently under construction, will serve as a vital commercial hub for Africa, particularly facilitating trade exchanges due to the abundant natural resources in the Sahel and across the continent.

According to Hawari, Morocco's commitment to enabling Sahel countries' access to oceanic resources aligns with a long-standing strategy aimed at strengthening economic ties with African nations. He noted the presence of Moroccan companies in various sectors across Africa, including banking and telecommunications, which will play a crucial role in deepening these economic relationships.

The development of the port of Dakhla is poised not only to enhance regional trade dynamics but also to foster broader economic integration and cooperation across the Sahel and beyond. This strategic initiative reflects Morocco's proactive approach in leveraging its geographical advantage to support sustainable development and economic growth in the region.
