Iran plans to implement 14 fishery-related projects in Makran Coasts

(MENAFN) According to an Iranian news agency, the head of Iran’s Fisheries Organization (IFO) has outlined plans for the implementation of 14 major fishery-related projects along the Makran Coasts in southeastern Iran. These initiatives are set to cover a significant land area of 65,000 hectares and are part of broader efforts under the newly established Makran Coast Development Secretariat by the Agricultural Ministry. This initiative aims to streamline management and ensure comprehensive planning for the region.

Hossein Hosseini, speaking on behalf of the IFO, highlighted that among these projects, seven focus specifically on the establishment of fishing ports. The Makran region, extending from the mountains west of Jask to parts of Pakistan's Baluchistan province along the Sea of Oman, holds historical significance and strategic importance for Iran.

Recent efforts in Makran, particularly at Chabahar port, have seen substantial investment in nautical and commercial infrastructure. Chabahar port serves as a crucial trade gateway linking the Indian Ocean with landlocked Central Asian nations.

Looking back to developments in August 2023, Hossein Dehghan, Secretary of the Makran Coast Development Council, emphasized that the coastal area's development requires extensive efforts spanning three years and necessitating an investment of approximately nine billion dollars. This initiative gained prominence nearly 15 years ago, catalyzed by directives from Iran's Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Despite significant progress over the years, challenges such as distance from central areas and infrastructure deficiencies have hindered further investment attraction in the region.

In a related development in June of the same year, Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) unveiled plans to attract domestic investments exceeding USD390 million specifically targeted at the Makran Coast. These initiatives underscore Iran's strategic vision to enhance its coastal infrastructure, bolster economic activities, and leverage its maritime resources effectively in the Makran region.
