Denmark advises local firms against using Russian antivirus software

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Denmark's Center for cyber Security (CFSC), operating under the Danish Defense Intelligence Service, issued a strong advisory urging both public and private companies to refrain from using antivirus programs developed by the Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. This cautionary statement was reported by state media and highlights growing concerns about potential security risks associated with Russian technology.

In a formal statement, Mark Fiedel, the deputy director of the CFSC, emphasized the importance of critically assessing the use of Kaspersky's antivirus products, particularly for entities handling sensitive information. "The good advice is to take a critical stance on whether Kaspersky should be the ones who deliver your antivirus product," Fiedel stated. He added, "Especially if you operate with things that you would rather not fall into the hands of the Russians."

Fiedel elaborated on the potential risks, noting that it would be challenging for Russian companies to deny cooperation with Russian intelligence services if requested. He pointed out the critical nature of the data at risk, saying, "We have a lot of information that we believe it would be really, really bad if foreign powers, including Russia, had access to it." The inherent access that antivirus products have to network systems heightens the concern, making the CFSC wary of using such products from Russian companies.

This advisory from Denmark comes in the wake of the United States' decision to ban the sale of antivirus software from Kaspersky Lab, reflecting a broader apprehension about cybersecurity threats and espionage. The CFSC's statement underscores the need for heightened vigilance and cautious selection of cybersecurity tools to protect national security interests from potential foreign interference.
