Reuters reported that China and the U.S. have resumed semi-official nuclear talks after five years.

The news agency cited two American representatives, stating that the discussions began in March.

Chinese representatives assured their American counterparts that they would not use nuclear weapons in a potential war with Taiwan.

U.S. officials had been concerned that China might use or threaten to use nuclear weapons if they faced defeat in a possible conflict with Taiwan.

Chinese negotiators expressed confidence that they could win a war with Taiwan using conventional weapons without resorting to nuclear arms.

These semi-official talks, where academics discuss government positions, are known as“Track 2” dialogues.

Official talks between government officials, or government-to-government negotiations, are called“Track 1.”

Reuters reported that six former U.S. officials and scientists participated in the two-day“Track 2” talks in Shanghai, alongside several former Chinese People's Liberation Army officials.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson indicated that the discussions could be“beneficial.” The department was aware of the talks but did not participate.

Competition between the U.S. and China extends beyond nuclear negotiations into military technology, where both nations strive to outpace each other in advancements.

Trade tensions between the two largest economies have led to tariffs, trade wars, and efforts to reduce dependency on each other's markets.

Power politics and geopolitics play significant roles in their rivalry, with each nation seeking to expand its influence globally and strategically counter the other's moves.
