Germany claims there was no mention of peace during Zelensky`s peace conference
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz clarified his intentions regarding his attendance at Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's upcoming 'peace conference,' stating that his objective is not to initiate peace negotiations but rather to garner international support for Ukraine. Addressing parliament on Thursday, Scholz emphasized that the summit, scheduled to take place in Switzerland next weekend, will not involve peace talks.
During a speech focused on security issues, Scholz underscored that the conference will not be a platform for peace negotiations, emphasizing that such discussions are still a distant prospect. Instead, he outlined his plan to leverage the gathering to mobilize countries worldwide in support of Ukraine and to reaffirm their commitment to international law and the United Nations Charter.
Zelensky's invitation to over 160 delegations for the Swiss conference notably excluded Russia. While numerous Western leaders and diplomats, including Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are expected to attend, United States President Joe Biden will be absent, with Vice President Kamala Harris slated to represent the United States.
The absence of China from the conference has drawn attention, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry stating on Monday that any peace conference aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict must involve equal participation from Moscow and Kiev, considering multiple peace plans.
Zelensky criticized China's decision to skip the conference, asserting that by doing so, China has aligned itself as "an instrument in the hands of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin." This stance reflects Ukraine's frustration with China's apparent support for Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
