Plane crashes in Canada’s Northwest Territories, kills several people

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, a tragic incident unfolded in Canada's Northwest Territories near the town of Fort Smith as an undisclosed number of individuals lost their lives in a plane crash. The ill-fated aircraft was en route to a diamond mine, and reports indicate that among the passengers were employees of Rio Tinto, a prominent global mining company, as revealed in a statement issued by the company on the same day.

Although Rio Tinto did not disclose the exact number of its employees on the flight, the company confirmed the presence of its workers and expressed condolences for the fatalities resulting from the crash during the journey to one of its diamond mines. The details surrounding the incident remain limited, leaving the public with unanswered questions about the extent of the tragedy.

Furthermore, the Northwest Territories coroner acknowledged the fatalities resulting from the crash, as outlined in a news release obtained by a US-based news agency. However, the coroner refrained from specifying the precise number of casualties, adding an element of uncertainty to the already somber situation. The community, as well as the broader public, awaits further information and official updates as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking aviation disaster.

“At this time, we can confirm there are fatalities but we will not be providing any additional information pending next of kin,” Northwest Territories Coroner Garth Eggenberger mentioned in an official news release.

Reacting swiftly to the plane crash near Fort Smith, the Fort Smith Health Centre took immediate action by activating its mass casualty protocol at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, as reported by the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority.
