Ukraine war caused ammo rates to escalate tenfold
(MENAFN) The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has triggered an unprecedented surge in ammunition prices across Europe, according to Michael Claesson, the chief of staff of the Swedish Armed Forces. In an interview with Sveriges Radio national broadcaster on Tuesday, Claesson highlighted the acute shortage of ammunition in Europe, attributing the price hike to Western nations urgently replenishing their munitions stocks and supporting Ukraine in its struggle against Russia.
Describing the increase as "dramatic," Claesson refrained from providing exact figures but indicated a staggering rise of between five to ten times compared to the period preceding the conflict.
The surge in demand, encompassing not only ammunition but also other military materiel, has created a competitive environment as nations scramble to secure necessary resources.
Claesson cited artillery shells for the Swedish-designed Archer 155mm self-propelled howitzer as an example, revealing an eightfold increase in prices compared to 2021. He explained that a substantial rearmament campaign is underway in Sweden and other European countries, intensifying the competition for available resources.
Sweden, like other European nations, faces the challenge of balancing support for Ukraine with the need to ensure its own security. In late December, Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson acknowledged the country's "difficult situation" in navigating these dual responsibilities. As of December, Stockholm has contributed USD2.2 billion in military assistance to Kiev.
Addressing the pressing need for a coordinated defense effort, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged European partners during the Society and Defense conference in Sweden to "create an arsenal for the defense of freedom" by enhancing joint arms production. The escalating prices and demand for ammunition underscore the far-reaching consequences of the conflict in Ukraine, affecting not only the immediate region but also shaping geopolitical dynamics and resource allocations across Europe. As nations grapple with these challenges, the impact on defense strategies, military budgets, and international collaborations remains a focal point of attention on the global stage.
