DFI-Funded Film Riverbed Wins Big At Mostra De València

Doha, Qatar: Doha film Institute (DFI)-funded production Riverbed, crafted by Emmy Award-winning scriptwriter and director Bassem Breche, clinched three prestigious awards at the recently concluded Mostra de València.

The film, which made waves at the Spanish-based international film festival, secured the coveted Best Film - Palmera d'or, Best Photography, and Best Original Soundtrack accolades. Breche took to Instagram to express his heartfelt gratitude, saying,“Big love to you” to the cast and crew of Riverbed for their outstanding contributions. He also extended his thanks to the film festival for their generous recognition.

Mostra de València, established in 1980, is dedicated to showcasing and promoting cinema from the Mediterranean basin as a cultural and geographical reference point.

Riverbed has been no stranger to acclaim, having earned several awards from international film festivals in recent years. It received a Special Mention for the Best Arab Film Award, the Special Jury Award, and the Best Performance Award for Lebanese actress Carole Abboud at the 44th Cairo International Film Festival. The film also secured an Exceptional Merit Award at WRPNtv Women's International Film Festival and the Best Fiction Film Award at the Jerusalem Arab Film Festival, among other honours.

Bassem Breche, a talented filmmaker and scriptwriter, has a notable track record with a portfolio of short films and series. Riverbed marks his impressive directorial debut.

The film delves into the complex narrative of Salma and her returning daughter Thuraya as they grapple with the challenge of preserving and reconstructing their lives together, and sometimes against each other. Salma, who embraced independence and detachment for years, is compelled to confront her past as Thuraya returns, defeated, divorced, and pregnant.

In addition to its cinematic successes, DFI has announced its monthly lecture series,“Watching the Classics - Making Movies Modern,” with Prof Richard Peña. The lecture will focus on Director Seijun Suzuki's film Branded to Kill. Film enthusiasts and cinephiles can join the session, with tickets available on DFI's website at QR50. The lecture is scheduled from 5.30pm to 7.30pm today, October 30, offering an opportunity for attendees to deepen their knowledge of film history through“Watching the Classics.”
