Tunisia Starts Submission Of Candidates For Local Council Elections

(MENAFN- Famagusta Gazette) The Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) of Tunisia announced that the submission of candidates for the local council elections started on Monday and will continue until Nov. 1.

According to a statement posted by the ISIE on its Facebook page, this operation runs from 8 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) to 8 p.m. local time (1900 GMT) in all centers nationwide.

“Hundreds of candidates had come to submit their applications for the local council elections,” the ISIE President Farouk Bouasker said at a press conference, decribing it as an“encouraging indicator” for the voter turnout at the polls slated for Dec. 24.

The first-ever local council elections in Tunisia will be held in 2,155 constituencies with a view to electing 279 local councils to set up a National Council of Regions and Districts.

On Sept. 22, Tunisian President Kais Saied signed a presidential decree dividing the country into five regions.

The division came within the new political organization included in the new Tunisian Constitution ratified in 2022, and also comes in preparation for the establishment of the National Council of Regions and Districts, which was stipulated in the Constitution. ■
