Denmark's Deputy Premier steps down, departs from politics
(MENAFN) On Monday, Denmark's Deputy Prime Minister, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, made a significant announcement by resigning from his position and disclosing his immediate departure from politics.
Ellemann-Jensen, who is the leader of one of the three coalition partners, the Liberal (Venstre) party, shared this decision during a party briefing.
“My presence is hindering the Liberal party from improving its position,” he declared. “I am, therefore, taking responsibility now and resigning as the leader of the Liberals. The Liberals do not have support the Liberals should have,” he added.
The resignation comes in the wake of a disheartening opinion poll that revealed substantial public dissatisfaction with the party's performance. According to the poll, only 8.5 percent of voters in Denmark would support the party if an election were held today, a sharp decline from the 13.3 percent of votes the party garnered in the November election last year. Jakob Ellemann-Jensen assumed the role of party leader in late 2019.
Ellemann-Jensen, who had returned to his duties in August 2023 after a period of sick leave, initially served as the defense minister at the beginning of the government's term. However, he later exchanged roles with Troels Lund Poulsen and subsequently held the position of the economy minister.
