(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (KUNA) -- The US expressed on Monday dismay by reports of Niger's military rulers' announcement of a plan to put ousted President Mohamad Bazoum on trial for high treason.
"We are incredibly dismayed by the reports that President Mohamed Bazoum's unjust detention has gone an even step further, and now that the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) is threatening prosecution," Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department Vedant Patel said in a statement.
"This action is completely unwarranted and unjustified and, candidly, it will not contribute to a peaceful resolution of this crisis."
Patel condemned the move as a further affront to democracy and justice and to the respect of the rule of law.
"A threat like this underscores the urgency of respecting the constitutional order in Niger. And in terms of -- I believe you also asked about engagement. We've continued to remain deeply engaged in the region," he said.
Meanwhile, the State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke Monday with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
"The Secretary commended President Tinubu's leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Second Extraordinary Summit on the situation in the Republic of Niger," Miller said.
He noted the importance of maintaining pressure on the CNSP to restore constitutional order and to see President Mohamed Bazoum and his family released. (end)
