Airstrikes in Sudan's Capital as Ceasefire Talks Prove Ineffective

(MENAFN) The sound of airstrikes could be heard in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, on Monday, indicating that efforts made during the weekend to broker a ceasefire between the warring military factions had not been effective. A Saudi diplomat informed AFP that both sides of the conflict are confident in their ability to emerge victorious from the hostilities, which has caused concern for the safety and wellbeing of the Sudanese people.

The talks between the Sudanese armed forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began on Saturday in Jeddah, with Saudi Arabia acting as a facilitator in the negotiations. The discussions marked the first attempt at reconciliation since the outbreak of fighting over three weeks ago. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the start of negotiations, stating that representatives of the two factions "began review of the proposed Declaration of Commitment to Protect Civilians and Facilitate and Respect Humanitarian Action in Sudan."

The ministry further reported that both parties recognized the need to ease the suffering of the Sudanese people and agreed to "reach near-term agreement on security measures to facilitate the delivery of emergency humanitarian assistance and the restoration of essential services to those in need." These were the primary goals of the meetings.

The continued violence and lack of progress in the negotiations have raised concerns about the safety and security of the Sudanese people, particularly those who are in need of humanitarian aid. The situation in Sudan is complex and has been ongoing for several weeks, making it difficult to find a solution that will satisfy both sides of the conflict. It is crucial that all parties involved in the conflict prioritize the safety and wellbeing of the Sudanese people and work towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing hostilities.
