UN Secretary-General Appeals for Massive International Support for Somalia Amid Drought, Insurgency

(MENAFN) Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has called for “massive” international support for Somalia as the country battles a devastating drought and a grinding Islamist insurgency. He arrived in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, on Tuesday and described his trip as a visit of "solidarity."

Guterres emphasized the difficulties faced by the country as it grapples with climate disasters and militancy. He said, "Although Somalis make no contribution to climate change, they are among the greatest victims. Nearly five million people are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity."

Somalia is currently experiencing a calamitous drought that has driven many to the brink of famine. The government is also engaged in a major offensive against the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabab Islamist militant group. The situation is dire, and international support is needed urgently.

The United Nations has launched a $2.6-billion appeal for humanitarian aid for the troubled Horn of Africa nation. However, Guterres noted that the appeal is currently only 15 percent funded. This lack of support is alarming given the severity of the crisis facing Somalia.

Five straight failed rainy seasons in parts of Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia have led to the worst drought in four decades, wiping out livestock and crops and forcing at least 1.7 million people from their homes in search of food and water. The situation is dire, and the UN has warned that about half of Somalia's population will need humanitarian assistance this year, with 8.3 million affected by the drought.

Guterres' visit highlights the urgent need for international support to help alleviate the suffering of the Somali people. The situation in Somalia is a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and the need for nations to work together to address global crises. It is hoped that Guterres' appeal for support will be heeded, and that Somalia will receive the assistance it needs to overcome this challenging period.
