Philippines Records High Number of Drowning Incidents During Holy Week
(MENAFN) The Philippines has experienced a disturbingly high number of drowning incidents, with at least 72 people losing their lives since the beginning of the month. This has been attributed to a number of factors, including the surge of people visiting beaches during Holy Week, a holiday traditionally celebrated by millions of Catholics in the nation, who travel to spend time with their families. However, the Philippine National Police has also pointed to the phenomenon of "revenge travel," where people, after years of being restricted from traveling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have become overly excited to visit beaches and resorts.
Colonel Jean Fajardo, a spokeswoman for the Philippine National Police, has stated that the high number of drowning incidents is partially due to the aforementioned reasons. She also noted that the victims include children who were left unsupervised while swimming, as well as individuals who visited beaches while under the influence of alcohol. It is worth noting that a more detailed breakdown of the fatalities is not yet available.
The recent surge in drowning incidents highlights the need for better safety measures, such as increased lifeguard presence and stricter supervision of children, in popular beach destinations during peak holiday periods. The Philippine government may need to impose stricter regulations to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
