Talks between Abdollahian, Borrell on Ukrainian War, Human Rights, and Sanctions with Iran, IAEA

(MENAFN) Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian spoke on the phone late on Sunday about a range of issues, including human rights, Iran's cooperation with the IAEA, sanctions against Iran, and the conflict in Ukraine.

Amir Abdollahian urged the IAEA to use technical and non-political methods throughout the negotiations, citing a number of cooperative projects Iran and the UN nuclear agency have developed to settle disagreements about the Safeguards Agreement.

Amir Abdollahian emphasized the interaction that has occurred between Iran and the IAEA in relation to the Safeguards Agreement. He added “We are making arrangements for the (director general of the International Atomic Energy) Agency’s visit to Tehran and have joint initiatives on the agenda.”

The top Iranian diplomat emphasized that a framework for resolving the concerns may be accomplished if the UN nuclear agency operates in a technical and non-political manner.

Amir Abdollahian also criticized some European nations for funding pro-terrorist groups operating outside of Iran, claiming that the massive turnout of Iranians at the demonstrations held on February 11 to commemorate the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution is proof that the Islamic Republic has the support of the general population.

He continued, "The European Union's conduct in recent months is the repeat of the ineffective policy of ex-U.S. president Trump which indicates the resumption of the double and implausible standards accompanied with instrumental use of human rights principles," in reference to the U.S.'s torn and outdated policy of sanctions against Iran.
