ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Two families reconciled after 30 years of enmity in eastern Kunar province on Monday, thanks to mediation of a tribal jirga and provincial officials.

Tribal leaders say the enmity between the families of Salam Jan and Abdul Ghaffar in Sholat area of Nurgal district had resulted from domestic violence and verbal clash. The feud had claimed six lives on both sides.

Malik Hassan Khan, a tribal leader and member of the jirga, said:“Both families fought with each other for almost 30 years and today they pardoned each other and promised to live in an atmosphere of brotherhood in the future”.

Khan said the jirga decided that if any side provoked or attacked the other in the future, they would be socially boycotted.

Kunar governor Ahmad Taha also asked the people to avoid enmity with each other and live in an atmosphere of brotherhood.

He said:“Fortunately, the long-running enmity between the families of Salam Jan and Abdul Ghaffar came to an end today with the efforts of the government and the Qumi Jirga. We hope both families will live in peace and brotherhood in the future.”

The governor credited the Islamic Emirate with creating an atmosphere of peace and security across the country and said the provincial administration together with tribal leaders was trying to resolve disputes among the people in Kunar.

On the other hand, the former foes said they were happy over their reconciliation and promised not to attack each other in future.

Abdul Ghaffar said his family lost three young men to the enmity that stemmed from domestic violence and continued for almost 30 years.“I thank the provincial government and Qumi Jirga for making peace between us through dialogue.”

He called on other rival families to end their disputes and live in peace and harmony.

Recently, two families in Dangam district of Kunar agreed to end their 20-year-old enmity through the mediation of the Qumi Jirga.
