Turkey, Sweden, and Finland must resolve concerns preventing Stockholm, Helsinki from joining NATO

(MENAFN) According to the White House, Turkey, Sweden, and Finland must resolve the remaining concerns preventing Stockholm and Helsinki from joining NATO.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters during a call that while Washington reiterates its support for Finland and Sweden joining NATO, it is unable to address Turkey's concerns.

Both countries started the formal application procedure joining NATO in May while Russia's conflict in Ukraine raged. The acceptance of the nations into the alliance requires approval from all 30 members.

Following a 95-1 Senate decision to admit Finland and Sweden to NATO, US President Joe Biden ratified the agreements in August.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the International Olympic Committee’s move to let Russian and Belarusian athletes to run in the upcoming Olympic Games.

“Russia must stop aggression and terror, and only after that it will be possible to talk about Russian participation in the context of the Olympic movement. Olympic principles and war are fundamentally opposed to each other,” Zelenskyy added.

“We will do everything so that the world will protect sports from political and any other influence of the terrorist state, which is simply inevitable if Russian athletes participate in competitions,” he also said.
