Lens stuns titleholders PSG winning 3-1 in first match of 2023


(MENAFN) Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was handed their initial Ligue 1 loss of the new year with RC Lens achieving 3-1 win against the forefront on Sunday.

Przemyslaw Frankowski, a Polish midfielder for Lens, scored the opening goal at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Lens, France, in the fifth minute.

Three minutes later, PSG equalized through a goal from rookie attacker Hugo Ekitike.

In the 28th minute, Belgian forward Lois Openda gave the home team a second lead, and the score was 2-1 at the end of the first half.

The fans of the Parisians may have believed that their club would make a comeback in the second half, but Alexis Claude Maurice shattered their illusions with another goal for Lens in the 47th minute, and the game finished 3-1.

Players saluted Brazilian football star Pele, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 82, before the game.

Following their second loss this season, PSG stay at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 44 points whereas runners-up Lens are still fighting 4 points behind.
