Not Much Hope For Next Afghan Generation: Survey

The findings of a recent survey show that the people of Afghanistan have given up hope for both themselves and the country's future generations a year after the political upheaval in the country.

A Gallup survey, which revealed the findings on Thursday, December 1, stated that Afghans have lost hope in themselves, while the economic situation, education, and the situation of human rights in the country have nosedived following the takeover of Afghanistan by the new administration.

Approximately one year after the political upheaval in Afghanistan, a“record-low” 11% of Afghans surveyed this year in late July and early August said children in their homeland have the opportunity to learn and thrive.

In the early days of the incumbent administration's
rule in 2021, when the group shut down every school in Afghanistan, Afghans' viewpoints of children's opportunities to study and flourish plummeted to 24%, the survey suggests.

However, this hope dropped significantly after the schools opened for boys, while the authorities in Afghanistan barred Afghan girls past the 6th grade to attend school, a decision that affects over 3 million girls from getting secondary education.

In 2022, less than one-fifth of Afghans (19%) responded that
they are satisfied with their educational system or schools, tying the lowest level of satisfaction reported in any country Gallup has polled in 16 years, the survey noted.

With the widespread poverty and unemployment in Afghanistan, the situation for the future generation of Afghanistan, the children, has also deteriorated as some are forced into marriages for dowries, while others are being subjected to child labor.

The survey findings said that only 27% of the people in Afghanistan believed children were treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, while gender inequality has expanded with reports of gender persecution.
