His Highness sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has ordered the release of 1,040 inmates in the emirate ahead of the UAE's 51st National Day.
The Attorney-General of Dubai, chancellor Essam Issa Al Humaidan, said the pardon reflects Sheikh Mohammed's keenness to give convicted inmates a chance to start a new life and bring joy to their families. This gesture, he added, stems from one of the country's key values of tolerance.
Al Humaidan said the Dubai Public Prosecution has started coordinating with Dubai Police to implement the order.
Every year, during special occasions, the country's Rulers pardon a number of inmates in a compassionate gesture that seeks to keep families together and raise quality of life.
