Kiev imposes further limitations on use of Russian language
(MENAFN) On Thursday, the Kiev City Council moved to remove Russian from the Ukrainian capital's public-school curriculum, citing national security concerns.
The restriction also applies to nursery schools, according to a statement on the council's website.
Vadim Vasilchuk, the chair of the council’s commission on education, stated the measure “will prevent an escalation of tensions in society and strengthen the protection of the education space in Kiev from the hybrid activities of the enemy state.”
“Language matters, and, in a time of war, it is an issue of national security,” Vasilchuk highlighted. According to the legislator, all lessons will be taught in Ukrainian, the country's single official language.
The action comes after Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council chief, Alexey Danilov, branded the Russian language as "an instrument of enemy propaganda" that "must entirely disappear from Ukrainian soil" last month.
The Education Ministry of Ukraine said in August that practically all works by Russian and Belarussian authors will be withdrawn from literary classrooms.
