In midst of nuclear concerns, Biden assistant, Russian officials undertook de-escalation talks
(MENAFN) White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is said to have undertaken covert conversations with top Russian officials in an attempt to lessen the possibility of the Ukraine war turning into a nuclear confrontation.
The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing unnamed US and allied officials, that the top aide to US President Joe Biden on national security affairs had confidential discussions in recent months with Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov and Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev that were not publicly disclosed.
However, the conservative tabloid said that its sources did not provide the dates of the discussions or the quantity of calls.
The White House refused to comment on the allegations, instead responding to questions about the negotiations with the statement attributed to National Security Council spokesman Adrienne Watson that "people say a lot of things."
The news comes only days after Sullivan visited Kiev and vowed Washington's "unwavering and unflinching" support for Ukraine's embattled administration.
Since January 2021, the US has provided about $20 billion in military support to Kiev, including rocket and air defense systems to help confront Russia's greater military force.
