More than 50 nations vote against UN resolution condemning Nazism
(MENAFN) 52 nations voted against a United Nation resolution on Friday that forbade the glorification of Nazism and similar ideas due to strong opposition from the United States and other western democracies.
The United Nation representative for Russia presented the draft resolution, which was passed with 105 votes in favor. It addressed the issue of "Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance." 15 nations abstained in addition to the 52 votes against.
The resolution denounces the creation of memorials and the conducting of open ceremonies celebrating the Third Reich and expresses extreme concern over glorifying Nazism, neo-Nazism, and former Waffen SS soldiers. The Russian representative cited an upsurge in xenophobia, anti-immigrant attitude, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism in introducing the resolution.
The United States and some of its allies stated that supporting Moscow in denouncing the lionization of Nazis would equate to supporting the Kremlin's weaponization of the Holocaust and offered this argument as justification for their vote against the resolution.
