Iran condemns 'illegal' UN investigation into alleged deployment of its drones in Ukraine
(MENAFN) Iran has urged the UN against carrying out the West's "instructions" to launch a so-called probe under Security Council Resolution 2231 to analyze the sort of unmanned aerial vehicles purportedly employed in Ukraine's present conflict.
In recent months, the US and its European allies have accused Iran of supplying Russia with drones for use in the Ukraine conflict.
The anti-Iran charges originally surfaced in July, when US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the Islamic Republic was ready to equip Russia with "up to several hundred drones, including weapons-capable UAVs on an accelerated timeframe" for use in the Ukraine war.
Both Iran and Russia have previously refuted the charges.
Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, addressed the allegations in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Security Council President Michel Xavier Biang, and Facilitator for the Implementation of Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015) Fergal Mythen, saying the "resolution itself provides no legal basis for such an investigation."
“Iran cautions the Secretariat against conducting such an illegal investigation or engaging in any activity that advances and implements the Western States’ ‘instructions’ and urges the secretary general to prevent the conduct of any such flawed tasks by the Secretariat [and] refrain from reporting on such irrelevant requests and unsubstantiated claims in his subsequent report on the implementation of Resolution 2231,” Iravani stated.
