Magnus Carlsen, world chess champion, has accused Hans Niemann of cheating

(MENAFN) Chess legend Magnus Carlsen has publicly accused American player Hans Niemann of cheating for the first time, claiming the rising star had done it more recently and frequently than he had previously confessed.

The Carlsen-Niemann story has engulfed the chess world for three weeks, as the five-time world champion withdrew from the 2022 Sinquefield Cup in the United States after losing to 19-year-old Niemann.

Carlsen asserted in an announcement released on Monday, “I know that my actions have frustrated many in the chess community. I’m frustrated. I want to play chess. I want to continue to play chess at the highest level in the best events.”

The outright withdrawal of the 31-year-old Norwegian from a match versus Niemann in the Julius Baer Generation Cup online event last week revived the controversy.

“I believe that Niemann has cheated more, and more recently, than he has publicly admitted. His over the board progress has been unusual,” Carlsen stated.

He did not elaborate on the nature of the alleged cheating, but did remark there was "more that I would want to convey."

Niemann has yet to respond to the charges.
