Regulator warns Germans to brace themselves for probable gas shortage

(MENAFN) Fearing that Russia will shut off natural gas supplies, the president of Germany's energy regulatory agency urged citizens on Saturday to save energy and prepare for winter, when demand spikes.

Klaus Mueller, President of the Federal Network Agency, recommended home and apartment owners to get their gas boilers and radiators tested and adjusted to optimal efficiency.

“Maintenance can reduce gas consumption by 10 percent to 15 percent,” he informed Funke Mediengruppe, a German newspaper and magazine publisher.

Mueller stated residents and property owners necessitate to utilize the 12 weeks before cold weather sets in to get ready. He asserted families should start talking now about “whether every room needs to be set at its usual temperature in the winter - or whether some rooms can be a little colder.”

The call came after Russia cut off gas supplies to Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia earlier this month, as European Union countries scrambled to replenish storage tanks with the fuel required to produce electricity, power industry, and heat homes throughout the winter.

The Russian state-owned energy corporation Gazprom blamed the decrease in natural gas flowing via Nord Stream 1, a pipeline that runs beneath the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany.
