Report states NATO troops incapable of moving swiftly across EU
(MENAFN) A recent report by the European Court of Auditors (ECA) has highlighted significant issues in the EU's ability to deploy military forces swiftly within its territory. Despite spending €1.7 billion ($1.76 billion) from 2021 to 2023 on improving military logistics, the EU has failed to achieve its goal of seamless movement of military staff, equipment, and supplies. Bureaucratic red tape and inefficient logistical planning continue to hinder quick deployments, the ECA concluded.
The report noted that military movements require a 45-day advance notification, and even basic movements could be blocked due to discrepancies in road regulations, such as weight limits for tanks or unsuitable infrastructure like bridges. The EU’s fragmented governance structure is also a significant obstacle, with no single point of contact responsible for military logistics, leading to confusion and inefficiencies.
With the allocated budget exhausted, the EU faces a four-year gap before more funds can be used, leaving military mobility largely stagnant. The ECA also raised concerns about the EU’s defense initiatives, pointing out that the European Defense Industry Program could fail to meet its objectives due to poor resource allocation. Furthermore, the ECA warned that financial support for Ukraine could lead to a rise in EU debt, as the country may struggle to repay its loans.
