Beijing will reopen schools; Shanghai will claim victory over Covid-19

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Beijing announced that elementary and secondary schools will be allowed to resume in-person lessons, while Shanghai's senior party official declared victory over COVID-19 after the city reported zero new local cases for the first time in two months.

Several Chinese cities adopted measures to halt the spread of the Omicron wave from March to May, with Shanghai instituting a two-month city-wide lockdown that ended on June 1.

The initiatives, which are part of China's zero-COVID policy, have reduced case numbers, but many of the harsh measures have fueled resentment and even rare demonstrations, as well as taken a significant toll on the economy.

Due to an increase of locally transmitted COVID cases, Beijing closed its schools in early May and encouraged pupils to switch to online instruction. Senior year middle and high school students were permitted to return to class on June 2.
