Inflation rises to double digits in Greece


(MENAFN) Greece is the most recent European Union nation to experience double-digit inflation, which has already reached its highest point since 1994.

According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, inflation in April increased to 10.2 percent year over year from 8.9 percent the last month (ELSTAT).

Natural gas (122.6 percent), electricity (88.8 percent), diesel fuel for heating (65.1 percent), fuel lubricants (29 percent), and solid fuels also saw significant rises (5.3 percent).

The cost of 'food basket' items has also increased. Costs for oils and fats increased by 22 percent, meat goods by 14.1 percent, and vegetables by 13.8 percent. The cost of dairy goods and eggs increased by 11.7 percent, whereas the cost of bread and cereals increased by 10 percent. Fresh fruit, as well as coffee, chocolate, and tea, all climbed by 7.1 percent.
