Tungsten Electrodes Find Application in Welding Due To High Melting Temperature

Tungsten has the highest melting temperature among pure metals, at 3,422 °C (6,192 °F). They have high electrical and mechanical properties that make them suitable for welding. Tungsten electrodes can be manufactured from different alloys. As compared to other metals, the electrodes are extremely hard, making it difficult for the arc to melt through it. Tungsten is also ductile and flexible. The above characteristics make tungsten ideal for use in high temperature fabrication operations.

The tungsten electrodes used in the TIG welding process are of different compositions. One is a solid piece of tungsten carbide with a high carbon concentration. Based on the composition, the tungsten electrode is used for specific welding applications.

Tungsten electrodes are used for direct current applications. These are the most common welding application in the welding industry. Tungsten is the main material used in TIG (tungsten inert gases welding). Tungsten electrodes have special properties that make them ideal for welding. Tungsten is inert in most powdered materials and cannot conduct electricity. This makes tungsten a great choice for welding as it does not heat up. Tungsten is also low in density. That means tungsten electrodes are very light and can easily be added to the mix of filler material during the TIG welding operation. During the TIG process, the wire feed is passed through an electrode which deposits the tungsten onto the work piece being welded. During the tax process the work piece is fed through the tungsten electrode and the gas shielding gas is passed through the work piece allowing the welding of the work piece to continue. Both processes allow the user to weld at high arc speeds and with the high fatigue characteristic of stainless steel wire. This characteristic allows for greater productivity and production in any welding environment.

Tungsten is one of the best alloys that can be welded into any metal that has a high melting point. It is a great metal for welding because it is very malleable and ductile and because of these characteristics it can be welded easily and quickly to produce a high strength weld. In particular the welding of Tungsten can be used to join the lower and upper ends of any stainless steel joint that requires reinforcement. Welding with tungsten is also a great method of forming the hard to weld joints like the muzzle of a cannon or clamp on a crane. It is also used in welding fuel tanks and in reinforcing the walls of ships making them stronger.

The common uses of tungsten electrodes may include forging, punching and bending as well as the above mentioned application. There are different methods of using the electrodes which depend on their application and the type of weld that need to be done.
