PM: Gov't will not tolerate attempts to destabilize society or threaten core values
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, July 25 (Petra) -- Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh on Sunday vowed that his government will always "stand up to those who seek to destabilize society, or threaten our values and our religious and cultural heritage", warning: "This is something we do not accept and it is a red line."
However, the prime minister added, "we will respond with the same level of firmness and decisiveness to those who seek to stoke an atmosphere that threatens the safety and lives of people," he told a cabinet session.
"Perhaps some people ill-chose their words while addressing a certain idea, nevertheless, this should not serve as a justification or reason for bullying that leads to incitement," Khasawneh told the ministers.
He was apparently referring to remarks by a member of the royal committee tasked with modernizing the country's political system on the Eid Al-Adha sacrifice ritual which stirred an angry public response, prompting her resignation from the panel.
"Threatening the safety and lives of people and stirring up an atmosphere and climate to encourage incitement against the people and their safety and to label them with anything that provokes sentiments that have nothing to do with our religion, our values and social heritage, nor our being a state of institutions, is a matter that we will counter with the same level of firmness against those who aim to destabilize our society, or those who seek to undermine our national, religious, cultural and civilizational constants," Khasawneh added.
The premier said: "This is the basic equation that we follow. We are fully committed, as a state and government, to physically protecting every member of our society, and shielding them from all forms of bullying that threaten the safety and lives of people, and which are exploited by some extremist elements to incite against individuals."
